Daniel Pink has a great sense of humor and is a really funny guy! I greatly enjoyed watching him talk to these people in the seminar and teach them about his ideas and his lengthy research is fascinating. I would have never even thought about these things and I guess I would have been in the crowd that is left behind. Most of the things he said are also in the book but it was a great experience to listen to the emotion in his voice so that I can literally hear him in my mind while I am reading.
One of the main points that I really agree with is that you must be intrinsically motivated in your job so that you can have meaning and significance in your life. Many people look for rewards on the outside that leave their life empty because they are just things that sit there in your cabinet and do not truly satisfy what you want. You need to be able to set goals for YOURSELF and once they are reached you can allow that to be enough of a reward for you, because you don't need a trophy, which is just an empty cup anyways, to sit up on your mantle. What significance does that really bring to your life?? Or grades, who truely is satisfied by their grades? Most students have pressure from their parents to do well in school and get good grades and they are not intrinsically motivated to do so it creates no meaning in their lives, no satisfaction.
In watching this video I learned the three things that make a good speech:
1. Brevity (keep it brief)
2. Levity (don't stress things so much that you freak out your audience)
3. Repetition (repeating things often helps people remember them better)
He also stated that if a picture is worth a thousand words, a metaphor is worth a thousand pictures. The metaphor that he gave to us was that the brain is divided into two halves. One on the right and one on the left. Both are used in all aspects of life but it is only that one side is used more than the other one in certain situations. All parts of the brain work together but, one is used more prominently than the others in that situation.
On the cover it says that right-brained people will rule the future. I do not agree with that statement and I do not believe that Daniel Pink does either. I now have discovered that the designer put that on the front and that it was originally a review of the book.
We need to develop and exercise our left-brains because they have not been utilized for so long that they have almost atrophied and need to be limbered up! That is what the portfolios at the end of the chapters will do for us.
He also made a great point of how Americans have gotten wealthier but have gotten no happier and are now on a search for meaning by doing things such as yoga and meditation. I have actually noticed this and have joined in on this search myself. If I were to look back on what I was looking for in my life a couple of years ago and then look at what I search now. It would be totally different. I used to look for rewards on the outside, material things to fill my life with meaning, but then I realized that I always felt empty and always wanted more. So now I fill my time with giving, caring, and things that boost me spiritually such as yoga and meditation. I also like to run a lot because it kind of gives me a break from reality while supplying my brain with endophins and time to think.
Overall, it was a great seminar to watch and it helped to give me a brief of the book before I really dug into it and got started. It was a good summary for preparation before I read the whole book.
Daniel Pink reminds me of a deeply intellectual scientist with a great sense of humor! How many times in history has that happened I wonder??
